Everyday Medical Leadership & The NHS is a 1-day course for doctors that maps directly to the Medical Leadership Competency Framework developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the NHS Leadership Academy. It is one of three courses in the Medical Leadership & Management category.
The challenge: The NHS is the world’s fifth-largest employer, and while its scale can make it seem impossible for individual doctors to make a difference, each moment of patient care results from countless small decisions and actions. Doctors have a moral and professional responsibility to understand the system in which they practice, enabling them to become proactive, engaged contributors.
The solution: This course helps participants explore the NHS system — past, present, and future — to identify everyday leadership actions that can lead to meaningful improvement.
What will I learn?
The course goes beyond factual understanding to focus on practical, system-level leadership and action. Topics include:
- The conflicting challenges facing the UK healthcare system
- Expectations, finances, politics, and morale from multiple perspectives
- Defining key issues and their origins
- Drivers, reactions, and experiences of change — from government to daily practice
- Choosing effective responses to change
- Clinical Governance
- The history of the NHS — lessons from its evolution
- NHS structure: who does what and how the systems differ across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland
- NHS finance: where the money comes from, where it goes, and the influence of individual doctors
- Applying lessons learned to improve everyday leadership and participation
Is this course right for me?
This course is suited to doctors who wish to:
- Improve their ability to engage colleagues during organizational change
- Develop informed opinions ahead of interviews
- Take initial steps toward engaging with NHS bodies and governance structures
It is ideal for foundation doctors, middle grades, consultants, and those new to the UK healthcare system. Certificates from this course are often used as evidence of leadership and management training for CT, IMT, or ST applications, CESR, or CCT.
Format
Tutors are experienced NHS consultants or faculty members with in-depth knowledge of UK healthcare. Courses are limited to 18 delegates for an interactive learning experience. Sessions run from 09:00 to approximately 16:30–17:00, depending on group interaction.
Each delegate receives a copy of A Guide to Medical Leadership & the NHS 2022–23 (retail price £49.99) as part of the learning package.
