What Are the MRCEM Exams?
The MRCEM exams are a set of 3 exams that will allow you to become a member of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, London. It is in 3 phases: the primary examination, the intermediate SBA, and the final OSCE. One must pass each stage to secure membership in the college.
The primary exam has no prerequisites except for GMC registration and is open to anyone. However, IELTS level 7 is recommended. The subsequent exams require getting through the previous stage(s) and some clinical training in addition.
Once registered for the exam online, you may sit for it at any of the designated places worldwide. The first 2 stages are computer-based, while the final OSCE consists of 16 live stations. You can obtain all information regarding the application dates, examination dates, and structure from the official MRCEM website.
Do I Need to Go on an MCEM Course?
The MRCEM Primary covers basic sciences, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology, which you may be out of touch with. The Intermediate SBA questions are based on scenarios related to emergency medicine. With the frequently changing guidelines in emergency medicine, you might find it difficult to keep up with the newest knowledge. In both these instances, an MRCEM course can help you. The targeted teaching using interactive sources will help you prepare more efficiently.
MRCEM OSCE courses are more practical and are aimed at candidates preparing for the MRCEM OSCE exam. Most candidates opt to take a course because this exam involves practical components. This course concentrates on the diagnostic and treatment skills expected of an emergency medicine physician and ensures hands-on experience with practical procedures and essential skills.
Depending on how you are used to studying, you can book courses for all three exams, or save wait until the MRCEM OSCE to attend a course.
