This in-person course spans 6 days, with sessions held across 6 separate days, offering a comprehensive foundation in all aspects of pharmacology and therapeutics in palliative medicine. The content is evidence-based where possible, ensuring participants become familiar with the literature relevant to clinical practice in this field.
Days 1–3:
These sessions will focus on the World Health Organisation (WHO) analgesic ladder, providing a deep understanding of:
- Pain physiology
- Pharmacology of step I, II, and III drugs, co-analgesics
- Current evidence and application in clinical practice
Specialist topics presented by expert speakers will include:
- Management of seizures
- Bone metastases
- Updates on immunotherapy
- Malignant spinal cord compression
Days 4–6:
These days will adopt broader themes, exploring:
- Metabolic and endocrine abnormalities relevant to palliative care, including hypercalcaemia and end-of-life diabetes management
- Evidence-based approaches to managing nausea, vomiting, constipation, and malignant bowel obstruction
- Pharmacological management of anxiety, depression, and terminal agitation
Participants will also benefit from insights on additional specialist topics, such as:
- Prescribing in patients with liver failure and renal impairment
- Recognition and management of delirium
This course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to enhance palliative care practice, supported by expert-led insights and evidence-based guidance.
