O&G specialty training runs from ST1–ST7 (7 years). Trainees rotate through obstetrics, gynaecology, and subspecialty areas including maternal–fetal medicine, reproductive medicine, and gynaecological oncology. There are also Academic Clinical Fellowship opportunities.

The MRCOG (Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) has three parts: Part 1 (basic sciences SBA), Part 2 (clinical SBA/EMQ), and Part 3 (clinical assessment — structured discussion, simulated patient tasks). Part 1 is typically attempted during ST1–ST2.

O&G is very competitive. The 2025 ST1 competition ratio was 16.65:1, making it one of the most competitive specialties. Key differentiators include MRCOG Part 1, O&G-specific audit, simulation training, and evidence of commitment to the specialty. The MSRA is used in the selection process.
