What is the training pathway for emergency medicine in the UK?
EM training starts with ACCS (Emergency Medicine) at CT1–CT3, covering anaesthetics, acute medicine, and ICM rotations alongside EM. Higher training runs from ST4–ST6, leading to a CCT in Emergency Medicine. Some trainees enter via the EM run-through pathway (CT1–ST6).
What exams do emergency medicine trainees sit?
The main exams are the FRCEM (Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine): FRCEM Primary (basic sciences), FRCEM Intermediate (SBA paper), and FRCEM Final (OSCE and SAQ). The Primary is typically taken in CT1–CT2, with the Final during higher training.
How competitive is emergency medicine training?
ACCS EM is very competitive. The 2025 CT1 competition ratio was 14.23:1, reflecting a sharp increase across all specialties. ST4 higher training is less competitive at around 1.46:1. Strong candidates will have emergency medicine audit, ATLS/ALS certification, and evidence of EM-related teaching or research.
