About this course
Develop the practical knowledge, ultrasound skills and procedural confidence required to perform ultrasound-guided central venous access safely and systematically. The Ultrasound-Guided Central Venous Access Course by Kung Medics is a focused, hands-on training programme for doctors and healthcare professionals who want to improve their competence in central venous catheter insertion using real-time ultrasound guidance.
The course combines essential anatomy, ultrasound interpretation, sterile technique, needle guidance and procedural simulation to help candidates build a safe and repeatable approach before performing the procedure in clinical practice. This half-day, small-group course emphasises hands-on ultrasound practice and repeated procedural simulation with immediate instructor feedback, allowing candidates to make and correct common technical errors in a safe environment before undertaking the procedure clinically.
During the course, candidates develop skills in understanding indications and contraindications, selecting insertion sites, identifying vascular anatomy, optimising ultrasound images, differentiating veins from arteries, assessing vessel patency, maintaining aseptic technique, using real-time ultrasound guidance, needle visualisation, guidewire insertion, dilatation and catheter placement, and recognising and preventing complications. The course places particular emphasis on ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein cannulation, including patient positioning, neck anatomy, probe positioning, short-axis and long-axis scanning, needle entry planning and real-time needle guidance. Candidates also practise in-plane and out-of-plane needle guidance techniques and work through the central line insertion sequence using simulation equipment.
Sterile technique and infection prevention are core components, covering hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, skin antisepsis, sterile barriers, sterile ultrasound probe preparation and appropriate catheter handling. The course focuses on recognising important complications associated with central venous catheter insertion (including arterial puncture, haematoma, pneumothorax, haemothorax, air embolism, cardiac arrhythmias, catheter malposition and infection) and how careful preparation, ultrasound guidance and appropriate technique can reduce procedural risk. Post-procedure management, including catheter function checks, flushing, dressing, documentation and confirming catheter position, is also covered.
