Ultrasound Guided Fascia Iliaca Block Course

This half-day course is specifically designed for clinicians working in Emergency Medicine and Acute Care who wish to master the Fascia Iliaca Block (FIB). As the "gold standard" for hip and femur fracture analgesia, the FIB is now a core clinical skill in the ED. This intensive session provides the theoretical background and extensive hands-on practice required to perform this block safely and effectively under ultrasound guidance.

The course covers ultrasound essentials including probe selection, image optimisation, and knobology; anatomical recognition of soft tissue landmarks, the femoral nerve, and the fascia iliaca compartment; needle techniques for in-plane needle insertion; and regional options for suprainguinal and infrainguinal approaches to the Fascia Iliaca Compartment Block, alongside an introduction to the PENG (Pericapsular Nerve Group) block.

By the end of this session, you will be confident in using ultrasound to guide needle placement for lower limb analgesia. You will refine image acquisition to obtain high-quality images necessary for safe block delivery, master needle guidance through practice on anatomical models with hydrodissection, utilise AI assistance to improve needle-tracking skills using NeedleTrainer™ (AI-based guidance), and standardise safety protocols for suprainguinal and infrainguinal approaches.

To maximise practical time, you will be provided with short pre-course videos covering ultrasound machine handling and basic image optimisation. On the day, the course consists of brief, high-impact lectures and live demonstrations on normal subjects, followed by extensive practical rotations. You will practice scanning on healthy volunteers and refine your needle skills using gel blocks, specialised fascia iliaca models, and NeedleTrainer™ technology.
