About this course
One-day hands-on course in core emergency point-of-care ultrasound, mapped to the RCEM curriculum. Taught by senior FAMUS-accredited instructors and RCEM-approved ultrasound supervisors, led by consultant faculty with extensive scanning and teaching experience since 2008.
The course covers six core modules: physics and knobology (image formation, probe handling, artefacts); eFAST (free fluid in trauma); abdominal aortic aneurysm scanning; echo in life support (cardiac arrest); vascular access (central and peripheral); and governance/sign-off pathways. Each module follows the same pattern: focused talk, live demonstration, then supervised hands-on scanning on healthy volunteer models, simulators and high-fidelity phantoms.
What's included:
• Small groups at every scanning station
• Teaching from accredited instructors and RCEM-approved supervisors
• Healthy volunteer models, simulators and vascular phantoms for practice
• Wavelength USB drive to keep (holds course files, logbook templates, and saves anonymised images for building competency evidence)
• Certificate of attendance
• Lunch and refreshments throughout the day
The course gives you the knowledge and hands-on time to start scanning with confidence. You leave with a clear plan for collecting supervised scans and gaining RCEM sign-off in your own department. No prior ultrasound experience is required. The course starts from first principles. If you already scan, the structured approach and supervised practice strengthen your technique.
Designed for emergency medicine trainees working towards RCEM ultrasound sign-off, acute and internal medicine doctors starting point-of-care ultrasound, advanced clinical practitioners, physician associates and GPs working in urgent care, and consultants and SAS doctors refreshing or formalising their skills.
