Frequently Asked Questions — Teach the Teacher

What's the difference between Teach the Teacher and Train the Trainer?
They're essentially the same course — the terminology differs by specialty. Medical specialties use "Teach the Teacher" while surgical specialties prefer "Train the Trainer". Both cover learning theories, teaching methods, assessment design, and feedback skills. Check which term your application scoring guide uses.
How long does my teaching course need to be for application points?
For IMT applications, you need a minimum of 6 hours of synchronous (live) teaching to score 1 point — this must be additional to your medical degree. For CST, teaching evidence is assessed on the A–E letter grade scale rather than specific duration requirements. Check your target programme's portfolio guidance before booking, as requirements differ by specialty.
Can a teaching course help me become an OSCE examiner?
Yes — many teaching courses include assessment design and OSCE examining skills. Combined with clinical experience, this qualifies you to apply as an examiner for medical school or postgraduate exams. It's also strong evidence for teaching competency on training applications.
Are online teaching courses as valuable as in-person ones?
For portfolio evidence, it depends on the format. Most IMT and ACCS applications require synchronous (live) teaching, so asynchronous self-paced courses will not score the teaching point. However, live online courses that meet the synchronous requirement are accepted. In-person courses offer more practice with live teaching sessions and peer feedback. Browse our online teaching courses if flexibility is your priority, but check the delivery format meets your application's requirements.
