Professional Communication in Everyday Healthcare

The course spans three core themes:

• Communicate Clearly — organise key information and explain your clinical reasoning and recommendations without over-explaining or losing the message.
• Speak Up & Escalate — contribute to MDT discussions, communicate with more experienced colleagues and raise concerns clearly when someone else needs to know, review, decide or act.
• Handle Difficult Conversations — use practical approaches for challenging conversations with patients, families and colleagues while maintaining empathy, clarity and professional boundaries.

Throughout, you will work with realistic healthcare scenarios, reflection activities and practical tools. The course includes a downloadable Professional Communication Toolkit with frameworks and resources you can return to throughout your early career, plus a final reflective development task for use in CPD, supervision or appraisal.

The course is designed for anyone moving from student to registered professional, relatively new to healthcare employment, starting to contribute more independently to MDT discussions, learning when and how to escalate concerns, encountering difficult conversations more frequently, or confident in clinical knowledge but less certain about communicating judgement under pressure. While some foundational material may be familiar to very experienced practitioners, the course deliberately targets the communication demands of early professional practice.
