About this course
This practical, engaging course equips clinicians with key knowledge on imaging in critically ill patients, while supporting preparation for the FICM or EDIC exams. Delivered live and online over two days, it covers a structured approach to interpreting images across acute head and spine, chest, and abdominal problems.
Participants will learn to recognise life-threatening findings, avoid common errors, and understand when to seek expert radiological support. The course explores the advantages and limitations of different imaging modalities—X-Ray, Ultrasound, CT, and MRI—drawing on key guidelines and protocols to support safe, effective decision-making in intensive care.
The format combines structured lectures with case scenarios and interactive Q&A sessions. Participants can ask questions by unmuting or using the chat box. Day 1 covers acute non-traumatic CT head, trauma CT head, chest radiology, and CT chest cases. Day 2 includes chest X-ray cases (compared to CT and ultrasound), abdominal radiology, abdominal X-ray and CT cases, and lung ultrasound in the critically ill.
Course director is Dr Justin Kirk-Bayley, a Consultant Intensivist & Anaesthetist in Guildford with significant expertise in critical care imaging and point-of-care ultrasound. Upon completion, attendees receive 12 CPD credits in accordance with the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) CPD scheme, plus a certificate of attendance.
The course is aimed at Consultant and Senior Trainee Anaesthetists and Intensivists looking to improve image interpretation skills in clinical practice, and is also suitable for those preparing for the FICM or EDIC exam. Participants will develop confidence in imaging interpretation and reporting practice for their day-to-day practice.
