About this course
Our FRCEM OSCE course in Manchester is a two-day, face-to-face preparation programme for doctors approaching the FRCEM OSCE. Senior Emergency Medicine consultants take you through challenging exam-style stations and give targeted feedback on your structure, reasoning, communication and leadership. The course suits Emergency Medicine registrars and senior clinical fellows, whether sitting for the first time or returning after an unsuccessful attempt.
The course runs over two consecutive days at the PLAB Guide Training Centre on Moseley Road in South Manchester, from 9am to 5pm each day. It is built around exam-style OSCE stations that reflect the breadth of the FRCEM OSCE: complex communication, clinical reasoning, senior decision-making, resuscitation, major trauma, paediatric emergencies, mental health, safeguarding, capacity and consent, ethical dilemmas, complaints, handover and escalation, risk and patient safety, and operational scenarios in a busy Emergency Department. Each station is followed by discussion and targeted feedback. Faculty look at how you structure the encounter, whether you speak your reasoning aloud, how you address risk, how you use your time and how you close.
Throughout both days the emphasis is on the maturity expected of a senior clinician: rapid assessment, clear priorities, proportionate decisions, appropriate escalation, support for junior colleagues, and balancing the needs of patients, staff and the department. Instead of scripts to memorise, you build adaptable frameworks that still hold up when the exam throws you something unfamiliar.
