About this course
MRCS Part B 5-Day Intensive Preparation Course
The MRCS Part B 5-Day Course is an intensive preparation programme for surgical trainees and doctors preparing for the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons Part B examination. Prepare systematically for the MRCS Part B OSCE with five days of focused, practical and exam-oriented training designed to improve clinical knowledge, communication, examination technique and performance under pressure. The course is structured around the core domains tested in the OSCE and is designed to help candidates move beyond passive revision by practising how to assess, examine, explain, communicate and perform in realistic station-based scenarios.
The course combines focused teaching, demonstrations, interactive discussion, clinical examination practice, communication stations, anatomy-based stations, surgical scenario practice, examiner-style questioning, timed OSCE stations and structured feedback. Candidates are encouraged to participate actively throughout. Teaching covers common surgical examinations including abdominal examination, hernia examination, peripheral vascular examination, thyroid examination, breast examination, neck examination, lymph node examination, and limb and neurological assessment.
The programme focuses on major areas commonly tested in MRCS Part B, including:
- Applied surgical anatomy
- Applied surgical pathology
- Clinical examination
- Communication skills
- History taking
- Procedural understanding
- Critical care and peri-operative management
- Trauma
- Surgical emergencies
- Interpretation of investigations and data
- Patient safety
- Professionalism
- Consent
- Explanation of procedures
- Post-operative complications
- Prioritisation and escalation
The course emphasises how to perform well in an OSCE setting, not simply on memorising information. Candidates receive structured feedback on clinical knowledge, examination technique, communication, structure, patient safety, professionalism, time management, clinical reasoning and presentation to the examiner. The emphasis is on making feedback specific and actionable.
By the end of the five-day programme, candidates should be better able to approach MRCS Part B stations systematically, perform common surgical examinations confidently, take focused surgical histories, explain procedures clearly, communicate professionally with patients, apply surgical anatomy clinically, interpret common investigations, manage acute surgical scenarios, recognise post-operative complications, demonstrate patient safety, prioritise appropriately, present findings clearly, manage time effectively, and perform under OSCE pressure with greater confidence.
