About this course
This one-day, scenario-based MRCEM OSCE team leader course in Manchester is designed for emergency medicine doctors who understand resuscitation algorithms but need to lead with confidence in the examination. You take the ED Team Leader role in adult, paediatric and major trauma resuscitation stations, then receive structured feedback on leadership, delegation, communication and OSCE technique. The day runs 10am–5pm with a small group led by experienced senior clinicians at the PLAB Guide Training Centre in Levenshulme.
The course builds on a repeatable leadership framework covering immediate safety and overview, calling for help, allocating roles, structured ABCDE assessment, treating problems as found, reassessment, identifying reversible causes, escalation and disposition. Each station features realistic scenarios with a simulated patient, team members, changing observations, investigation results, sudden deterioration, interruptions and examiner prompts, followed by detailed debriefs. You can repeat difficult scenarios to apply feedback straight away.
What you'll learn includes taking control of an ED resuscitation scenario and establishing leadership early, applying structured ABCDE approaches under time pressure, delegating tasks using closed-loop communication, leading paediatric and trauma scenarios, recognising deterioration and escalating appropriately, and verbalising clinical reasoning with clear handover and disposition plans. Teaching draws on principles from adult and paediatric advanced life support, European paediatric advanced life support and ATLS-style trauma assessment, alongside crisis resource management.
The course is designed primarily for the MRCEM OSCE but the skills also carry over to FRCEM OSCE preparation, workplace-based assessments and leading real resuscitation teams. It is an independent exam-preparation and clinical-skills programme — not an official ALS, APLS, EPALS or ATLS provider course, and does not award provider certification or guarantee exam success. You receive a course certificate and 6 CPD points.
