Participants will delve into prevalent risk domains associated with prescribing through a structured approach including:

  • Guided learning
  • Analysis of MDDUS case studies
  • Collaborative group exercises,
  • Facilitated discussions

These areas often trigger complaints, regulatory scrutiny, and medical negligence claims. Practical strategies for risk mitigation, informed by a systemic approach within secondary care, will be proposed for integration into doctors’ prescribing practices.

Participants will scrutinise the root causes of prescribing errors in secondary care and explore countermeasures, such as avoiding prescribing medications to patients with known allergies or contraindications and addressing the impact of human factors on errors and lapses in concentration. The supportive role of pharmacists in error prevention will also be examined.

Moreover, participants will analyse identified risk factors about specific prescribing contexts, aligning with pertinent regulatory directives regarding prescribing norms. These include areas such as prescribing controlled substances, self-prescribing, and prescribing for close associates.

This course has been submitted to the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK for accreditation for 3 CPD credits.

Facilitated by MDDUS risk advisers, the course will be spearheaded by Alan Frame.
