This course for doctors covers the key areas of professionalism that doctors face daily, both at work and in their personal lives. The goal is for participants to develop a better understanding of their medico-legal responsibilities and the common areas where doctors can find themselves in difficulty throughout their careers, so that they can mitigate risk.

Session 1: When things go wrong

This session discusses the changing expectations of doctors in relation to professionalism and the factors that can undermine it. It covers:

Doctors’ professional responsibilities when patient safety concerns arise as a result of concerns about a colleague’s health or behavior, or in the event of a serious patient safety incident.

GMC guidance and other requirements related to raising and responding to concerns, reflective practice, and the duty of candor.

Session 2: Ensuring compliance with conduct requirements

This session discusses doctors’ professional responsibilities regarding their conduct and behavior in their personal and professional lives. It covers:

Common risk areas associated with GMC and other requirements related to self-reporting, colleague interactions, personal health and medication use, personal beliefs, and probity.

Session 3: Maintaining boundaries

This session discusses doctors’ professional responsibilities regarding maintaining boundaries with colleagues and patients in their personal and professional lives. It covers:

Common risk areas associated with GMC and other requirements related to social media use, relationship management, gift acceptance, chaperone use, and treating family, friends, and colleagues.

The sessions will vary and include presentations, group discussion, and case studies.

This course is led by an expert in training and risk management, and is accredited for 5 CPD credits.
