This course is designed for emergency medicine consultants, associate specialists, and senior trainees who have achieved or are close to achieving the competencies outlined in the old RCEM curriculum.


Here is a breakdown of the topics that will be covered in the course:




  • Shock protocol (RUSH): This protocol is used to assess and manage patients in shock. It includes a physical examination, laboratory tests, and point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS). The course will cover the use of PoCUS to assess patients in shock, with a focus on the RUSH protocol.

  • Basic and advanced cardiac assessment in shock: This section will cover the assessment of the heart in patients in shock. Topics will include the physical examination, electrocardiography (ECG), and PoCUS. The course will also cover advanced cardiac interventions, such as pericardiocentesis and thoracotomy.

  • Lung scanning: This section will cover the use of PoCUS to assess the lungs. Topics will include the blue protocol, IVC and DVT.


The course will be delivered by experienced emergency medicine physicians. It will be a mix of lectures, workshops, and practical sessions. The course will also include opportunities for hands-on practice with PoCUS machines.
