This online course is designed to equip participants with a systematic approach to reading and critiquing surgical and medical journal papers. It offers a step-by-step guide to analysing methodology, statistics, and findings.

Before the course, participants will receive a selection of recently published journal papers to read in preparation. While the course focuses on general surgery, the skills for reading and critiquing papers are relevant to all surgical and medical specialties.

This course is especially beneficial for those preparing for the FRCS academic viva in general surgery or physicians preparing for vivas or research projects.

Led by knowledgeable and approachable tutors, the course is interactive, providing ample opportunities to ask questions and gain a thorough understanding of the material.

Who Should Attend?

The course is aimed at surgeons preparing for their FRCS examinations in General Surgery and physicians working on vivas or research projects. Surgical and medical research papers will be reviewed and discussed. It may also be of interest to other trainees, such as those preparing for ST3 interviews or those with a keen interest in research.

Course Format

The course will be conducted as a workshop rather than traditional lectures. It consists of two sessions held over two Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 13:30. Participants will be required to present a paper and engage actively in discussions, with questions encouraged throughout.
