This 16-week online CPD course covers Level 1 knowledge and application of breast ultrasound, aligned with the UK Royal College of Radiologists’ curriculum for non-radiologists. It provides a theoretical foundation in the principles and practice of clinical breast ultrasound, aimed at breast clinicians seeking to incorporate supervised breast ultrasound into their clinical practice.
Course Structure
The course begins with one week of background reading, followed by 14 weeks of active online participation, divided into seven key topics. The final week will allow for consolidation of knowledge.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Understand the physics and technology behind ultrasound practice
- Demonstrate competent breast ultrasound techniques
- Compose structured, comprehensive ultrasound reports for medical records
- Describe and recognise the ultrasound appearance of the normal breast
- Identify and evaluate the ultrasound appearance of abnormal breast conditions (benign, infections, B3, cancers)
- Interpret the ultrasound appearance of the post-operative breast, including scarring, implants, and complications
Module-Specific Outcomes
Participants will also:
- Understand the strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of breast ultrasound
- Appreciate the role of ultrasound in the triple assessment process
- Understand the interdependence between mammographic and ultrasound findings
- Perform thorough ultrasound examinations of the breast and axilla, confidently identifying normal anatomy and excluding sonographic lesions
- Recognise established criteria for lesion characterisation
- Identify and distinguish between normal and suspicious axillary lymph nodes
- Write detailed ultrasound reports with grading, differential diagnoses, and recommendations for further management
- Recognise personal limitations and seek expert advice when necessary
